Authentic picturebooks in the lives of young EFL learners and their teachers

Speaker: Dr. Réka Lugossy

In this webinar, Dr. Réka Lugossy will present findings from qualitative research on using picturebooks in four Hungarian primary schools, where children had no access to the target language outside the classroom.
First, she briefly considers theoretical assumptions that support the use of stories in education. Then, she discusses (1) how picturebooks were used in class and as pleasure readings at home, (2) how the children, their teachers, and their close communities benefited from longitudinal engagement with picturebooks, and (3) some of the main challenges involved. Themes explored include: providing equal opportunities through using authentic picturebooks, involving boys, and teachers’ beliefs.
